Your adventure begins with a private guide meeting you at your hotel in Kigali. The day starts with a visit to the Kigali Genocide Museum, where you’ll learn about and pay your respects to the victims of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. This visit provides a deep and moving insight into Rwanda’s history. Afterward, you’ll depart from Kigali and embark on a scenic 4-hour drive north-west through Rwanda’s lush hills and lively market towns.
Along the way, you will be treated to panoramic views of the countryside, including terraced hillsides and vibrant local life. By the afternoon, you will arrive at the stunning Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, which is located at the foot of the Virunga Volcanoes. After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the park’s ranger station for a briefing about gorilla trekking. The briefing covers the dos and don’ts while interacting with the gorillas, ensuring that your experience is both safe and respectful of the animals. Once the briefing is complete, you’ll head into the forest with a senior ranger guide to begin the gorilla trekking.
The trek into the forest can be challenging, with varying terrain and altitude, but the reward is immense. Once you locate a family of mountain gorillas, you will have one hour to observe and interact with them. These moments are truly unforgettable as you witness the gorillas in their natural habitat, often displaying endearing behaviors like feeding or playing. After an early breakfast, you’ll transfer to the Ntebeko Visitors Center for the Golden Monkey Trekking experience. Golden monkeys are an endangered species, and this trek offers another exciting opportunity to interact with primates in their natural environment. With the assistance of your ranger guide, you’ll hike through the forest and up into the volcanic slopes, where you may encounter a group of these colorful and energetic monkeys. Once located, you’ll have an hour to watch and photograph them as they play and forage in the trees.
After the golden monkey trekking, you will head to Lake Bunyonyi, one of Uganda’s most picturesque and tranquil locations. Situated between the Kabale and Kisoro districts, this lake is surrounded by lush hills and numerous small islands. The serene setting is perfect for unwinding after a day of trekking. On the final day of your journey, you will enjoy an early breakfast at your lodge before starting your drive back to Kigali, Rwanda.
